Music Listening Activities for Children
Welcome to WDAV 89.9's Music Listening Journal! This fun-filled activity lesson is geared for third graders, however, it can easily be adapted to suit other age groups at your discretion. Each activity takes about 20 minutes to complete, and lessons may be taught in any order.
WDAV 89.9's Music Listening Journal is designed to give children an immediate connection with classical music. Children are encouraged to trust their intuitive reactions to the music they hear. They are NOT given information about composers, eras, works, opus numbers and so forth. Instead, they are given enjoyable, challenging experiences that require them to listen closely with a creative ear. Some exercises encourage children to explore human emotion and expression; some challenge literacy skills and others require mathematical thinking. All are FUN and filled with things to which young people can relate.
The journal presents classical music in a format that can easily be worked into a regular classroom day. No special equipment (other than a CD player) or knowledge of classical music is required. You don't have to be a music teacher to incorporate these activities into your curriculum. Home educators will find the activities a wonderful way to add classical music to their children's experience. Unfortunately, due to high demand, WDAV no longer has companion cd's to send out. We apologize for any inconvenience.
These activities do not come with 'right' or 'wrong' answers, but rather challenge the children to consider how this music affects them personally.
