GENERAL MANAGER

BASIC FUNCTION:
Lead WDAV’s efforts to provide a high-quality, financially viable, public radio service to listeners throughout the Central Piedmont region of the Carolinas. Oversee all station functions and manage constituent relationships.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Lead WDAV staff and key constituencies in the development and implementation of successful strategies to ensure financial success and provide maximum public service consistent with the mission of the station.
  • Serve as WDAV’s primary liaison to essential constituencies, including station licensee Davidson College, the WDAV Community Advisory Board, key donors, and leaders of the area’s major cultural institutions, among others.
  • Lead a talented team of fifteen staff members, directly supervising and evaluating the work of five key staff members, and indirectly supervising ten other full-time employees.
  • Engage actively in all fundraising activities requiring the chief executive’s involvement, as determined in close cooperation with station’s fundraising leadership. Serve as the main representative of WDAV to its constituents and the public.
  • Represent WDAV’s interests with key state and national organizations and agencies, such as The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, National Public Radio, the Federal Communications Commission, etc.
  • Manage station finances and take such steps as may be necessary to ensure the organization’s financial viability and growth.
  • Oversee acquisition, implementation, maintenance and replacement of station’s technology infrastructure. Explore and evaluate new technologies, including new media, and implement as deemed necessary.
  • Ensure station compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Office environment but with frequent outside meetings; evening and weekend work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent in training and experience, at the very least. At least five years’ experience in senior management positions, with a proven track-record, in the non-profit world; experience with arts management, and especially public broadcasting, is highly desirable. Experience leading organizations through periods of significant change a major plus. Must be a first-rate communicator in writing and orally, comfortable addressing many different types and sizes of groups. Demonstrated success soliciting funds is a requirement. Must have a good understanding of financial management; an understanding of accounting requirements for non-profits is desirable. Should have demonstrated ability to lead and motivate diverse staff including creative personalities. Must be technology savvy and have at least intermediate skills with common office computer programs, e.g. Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to read and analyze statistical reports is helpful. Valid NC driver’s license with good driving record required. A personal affinity for music and the arts is extremely desirable.
