The set ends with several excerpts from his magnificent setting of the Gloria. This has all Vivaldi’s best known works, including my personal favorite, the Concerto for 2 Trumpets in C, RV 537. >>Buy It Vaughan Williams: Orchestral Works Various soloists Cantilena; London Philharmonic / Haitink This is a bit of a splurge, but it contains all the symphonies by one of my favorite composers, as well as some other very well-known works such as the Fantasias on Greensleeves and a Theme by Thomas Tallis ,and The Lark Ascending. This is a bit of a splurge, but it contains all the symphonies by one of my favorite composers, as well as some other very well-known works such as the Fantasias on Greensleeves and a Theme by Thomas Tallis ,and The Lark Ascending. >>Buy It Simon Rattle Edition - Beethoven Simon Rattle conducts various ensembles This is another big package, but well worth it to have all the Beethoven symphonies performed by some of the best orchestras in the world with arguably the best conductor working today. >>Buy It Albeniz: Iberia, Navarra, Suite Española Alicia De Larrocha This two disc set features the late, great pianist Alicia de Larrocha performing the most important and familiar works by the Spanish nationalist composers, Isaac Albeniz, in their original settings for solo piano. It’s refreshing to hear these works as they were originally imagined, rather than in the more familiar guitar transcriptions. >>Buy It Debussy, Ravel: String Quartets St. Petersburg String Quartet This disc brings together the two string quartets by the most famous Impressionist composers, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. The Ravel is a special favorite of mine, and I have a special place in my heart for the string quartet form. As a bonus, there’s a string quartet arrangement of Debussy’s Golliwog’s Cakewalk. The ensemble and the engineering on this recording are sublime. >>Buy It
Stravinsky: Petrouchka, Le Sacre du PrintempsPierre Boulez, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra I continue to be bowled over by the sheer energy of The Rite of Spring, especially the very last minutes of the work, as the low brass and timpani are oom-pah oom-pah-ing out complex rhythms and syncopations. It has me from the opening bassoon. >>Buy It Smetana - Má Vlast Sir Roger Norrington - London Classical Players There are any number of wonderful recordings of this work, of which the second movement, The Moldau is the best known. But there's more to the cycle than just the famous river that meanders its way through Prague; it's a tour of the Bohemian countryside and spirit. >>Buy It Tallis: Spem in Alium, Etc. The Tallis Scholars There's no other piece quite like the 40-voice motet by the English composer from the Tudor period Thomas Tallis, and hearing the Tallis Scholars (and guest singers) filling up a wonderfully reverberant hall is a treat... especially with headphones. >>Buy It Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3 Loren Maazel, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra I first heard this symphony as a demonstration of a stereo setup - recordings generally warn listeners that the opening measures should be barely audible, or there's a good chance of blowing out a speaker. The proud owner of the stereo began the piece much louder than recommended, and when the organ made its entrance at the beginning of the fourth movement, it made a lasting impression on me. >>Buy It
