Ted Weiner

The Early Shift

Ted WeinerTed Weiner is a WDAV veteran.  He has been on the WDAV airwaves since November 1986 when he arrived in Charlotte from the Big Apple and began working as a weekend and all-round fill-in announcer. He became Music Director in 1991 and has been maintaining the WDAV recording library and choosing the music we hear ever since.

A native of Marin County, California, Ted comes from a family with close ties to classical music.  His uncle Louis Vyner was a respected conductor who worked with the likes of Leopold Stokowski and helped launch the career of Andre Watts.  Ted credits his uncle for inspiring his love of classical music.

Ted's background prior to public radio is in theatre, either, as he says, "performing on the stage or sweeping it."   In the mid-70's he trained with both the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and the National Shakespeare Company Conservatory in New York City.  In 1985, he decided to leave the hustle and bustle of the big city and move to Charlotte, where his brother, Louis, was, interestingly enough, Music Director at WDAV.  Obviously, this fortunate set of circumstances led to a new career, and Ted says, "My initial apprenticeship under Louis provided the springboard for my intensive self-education in the intricacies of classical music radio programming and announcing."

Classical music is definitely one of Ted's passions, but he is also a fan of films, amusement parks, and the Beatles.
