City-Scapes

1. This music describes a busy street scene in a country in Europe. Can you figure out where we are by listening? You'll hear an instrument making a bright clicking noise in this music. It's your biggest clue. The instrument's name is "castanet." If you don't already know, you can figure out where we are by looking up the origin of the word "castanet" in a dictionary.

I think we are in ____________________.

2. The man who wrote this piece (called "Quiet City") lived in America. He liked to write music late at night and enjoyed thinking about quiet city streets without all the activity of a busy new day. Think about these questions as you listen:

What time could it be? ____________

What kinds of things could be happening in the city at this time of day or night?______________________________

____________________________________

____________________________________

Do you hear that trumpet playing? What do you think it could be? A taxi roaming the empty streets? A first ray of sunlight at dawn? What do you hear?

The third musical city scene you'll be hearing is called An American in Paris. Think about that title and try answering these questions BEFORE you hear the music:

a.) Do you think the music will be serious or funny? ____________

b.) Do you think the music will be fast-paced or calm?
___________

Now, listen...Any surprises? Were you right? The composer wrote this music about an American's very first trip to Paris, France. What kind of excitement do you think this American ran into over there?
