A Carolina Christmas from Biltmore Estate,
with Kathy Mattea ![]() On Thursday evening, September 10, 2009 at 7:30 PM, WDAV 89.9 Classical Public Radio recorded a holiday concert before a live audience in the Banquet Hall of Biltmore House. This 90-minute concert will be produced as a one-hour program and syndicated to public radio stations across the country for broadcast during the 2009 holiday season. A Carolina Christmas from Biltmore Estate, with Kathy Mattea will be a festive celebration of the Appalachian folk traditions and other styles native to our region. You’ll hear African-American spirituals, folk favorites, Celtic jigs, sacred music of the season...and center stage will be two-time Female Vocalist of the Year Kathy Mattea, singing fresh arrangements from her remarkable holiday albums: the Grammy award-winning Good News, as well as Joy for Christmas Day, songs that highlight the “good news” of the holiday. Ms. Mattea will be accompanied by the Carolinas’ premiere choral ensemble, VOX, as well as the Baroque/Celtic trio The Beggar Boys. The Banquet Hall of Biltmore Estate makes for a magnificent and yet intimate setting. The soaring acoustic space was designed for and built by George Vanderbilt more than 100 years ago. First opened to friends on Christmas Eve 1895, this French Renaissance chateau remains America's largest privately owned home. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations for the concert:
