89.9 WDAV's Young Chamber Musicians Competition powered by OrthoCarolina

Calling all young classical musicians between the ages of 14 and 24

89.9 FM WDAV Classical Public Radio, with the generous support of OrthoCarolina, is launching the Young Chamber Musicians Competition for exceptionally talented young musicians (ages 14-24). Aspiring young chamber ensembles are invited to submit video performances for a chance to win their share of $4,500 in cash prizes.

Registration opens January 21st. Until then practice and prepare to win!

The Young Chamber Musicians Competition is open to chamber ensembles with musicians between ages 14-24 who have permanent residence in North Carolina or South Carolina. Ensembles must consist of 2-10 musicians. All instruments are eligible, excluding voice and all electronic/amplified instruments.

Read Official Rules.

Ensembles will compete in two of three age categories: 14-18 or 19-24. The age of the oldest member of the ensemble will determine the age category of the ensemble. Ensembles will submit two video-taped recordings. Submissions will be accepted January 21 through March 9, 2015.

Entrants must submit two (2) separate classical music works of distinct styles and periods. Specifically, entrants cannot submit more than one work from each of the following periods:

· 1770 and earlier (Baroque and earlier)
· 1770-1810 (Classical)
· 1811-1900 (Romantic)
· 1900-1950 (Modern)
· 1950-present (Contemporary)

A total of 4 finalists (two from each age group) will be selected from all submissions. WDAV will post one video from each finalist on wdav.org for popular vote.  The popular vote will take place between March 31 and April 30, 2015.  Vote totals from the popular vote will be combined with the judges' tallies at the live competition. Scoring of the video submissions and live performance will be based on the following criteria: interpretation, ensemble sound and unity, and technical accuracy.

All six finalists receive an invitation to participate in the live, judged concert at the Tyler-Tallman Hall on May 2, 2015.  Finalists will perform the same piece that was selected for public voting.

All finalists will receive a cash prize:

Age Category: 19–24 Years
First place $1,500
Second place $1000
Age Category: 14-18 Years
First place $1,250
Second place $750
