A Call for Volunteers! – WDAV Needs You

Our spring membership campaign is just around the corner and we’re looking for a few good men (and women) to answer phones, take pledges and help us raise $185,000. You’ll never meet a nicer, more interesting group of people than WDAV volunteers. The coffee’s on us – meals are provided and we guarantee you’ll not only make a difference, you’ll have a good time! Call Kim Cline at 704-894-2977 or check the schedule online at wdav.org after Feb 18th.

To all you classical music lovers - Happy Valentine's Day from WDAV!

A Carolina Live Special Event – Margaret Garner
In honor of Black History month, WDAV will rebroadcast a very special concert event – Opera Carolina’s production of Margaret Garner - recorded live at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in April of 2006. Inspired by Toni Morrison’s novel “Beloved,” the opera is a dramatic tour de force. Mike McKay hosts this special program that also includes our interview with the opera’s star, the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves. Margaret Garner can be heard Saturday, February 16th at 3:00 p.m. Get details at our Carolina Live page.

Bernstein and Beethoven at the Contest Page
Check out the terrific 2 DVD set we’re offering this month at our contest page. Leonard Bernstein and Krystian Zimerman take on Beethoven’s Piano Concertos in stellar performances by the Vienna Philharmonic. Enter all our contests at the Contest Page.

Weekly Arts Feature - Hermitage Ballet
History will be made at Ovens Auditorium next week when Russia’s legendary Hermitage Ballet of St. Petersburg performs their Gala Program Monday at 7 p.m. The visit is a stop on the company’s first ever U.S. tour. WDAV’s Rachel Jeffreys tells you more about it Saturday (2/16) at 11:30 a.m. You can also listen online at our Interview Archives page.

RSC Symposium – Imagining History
The Royal Shakespeare Company's visit to Davidson College concludes this weekend with an array of public events, lectures, performances and special guests. The Symposium offers a terrific opportunity to experience a “works in progress” play. British playwright Rona Munro has completed a script exploring the race to conquer space during the Cold War. Under the working title of Little Eagles, several performances will be offered and tickets are still available – find out more at the events calendar.

Piano Man on New Classics
The wildly popular 25 year-old virtuoso pianist Lang Lang recently performed at the Grammy Awards with jazz legend Herbie Hancock in a tribute to Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. This Friday on New Classics we’ll be featuring his new compilation CD which is a tribute to Lang Lang’s recent recording career at Deutsche Grammophon. New Classics airs every Friday at 2 p.m.
