Music Celebrating Upcoming Holidays

The religious holidays have been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for composers over the centuries. The next week will see a number of special selections and programs on WDAV to mark Passover and Holy Week. See below for more specifics.

Music for the Passover Season

Two special pieces of music commemorate the Passover season on WDAV. On Wednesday, 4/12 at 9 p.m., Handel's, Israel in Egypt will be performed by the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra, John Eliot Gardiner, conductor. The oratorio has been described as Handel's most demanding work for chorus and tells the Exodus story. It will be followed by Kurt Weill's "lost" 1937 musical pageant, The Eternal Road.

Easter Broadcasts

WDAV will feature a number of special programs for Easter. Highlights include:

Bach's Easter Oratorio - Mon, 4/10, 9 p.m. Performed by one of America’s finest ensembles, Apollo's Fire, Cleveland's Baroque Orchestra and Chorus.

Beethoven's, Christ on the Mount of
Olives
- Thur, 4/13, 9 p.m. The National Chorus and Orchestra of Lyon. This is one of the few musical depictions in classical music of Christ's visit to the garden at Gethsemane.

Arvo Pärt's Passio, (Saint John Passion) - Fri, 4/14, 9 p.m. Tonus Peregrinus Ensemble. This composition is at once contemporary and timeless and results in a truly ethereal experience.

Bach’s St. John Passion - Fri, 4/14, 10 p.m. King's College Choir, Cambridge in concert.

Carolina Live - The Concert Series (Special Easter Edition) - Sun, 4/16, 3 p.m. Parts II and III of Handel's oratorio Messiah, dealing with the Passion and Resurrection, performed by the Western Piedmont Symphony conducted by John Gordon Ross, the Lenoir-Rhyne A Cappella Choir, and soloists from the North Carolina School of the Arts.

A complete listing of our holiday special programming can be found at wdav.org.
